Maintenance Checklist

The following checklist is intended to address general maintenance. This checklist
should be used as a springboard to develop a suitable checklist for your specific
playground and particular needs.

It does not

provide a complete safety evaluation.

Playgrounds that have been properly engineered and properly installed may still present
risks of accident or injury to the children who use the equipment. Also, be reminded that
adult supervision is a vitally important contributor to the overall safety of the children
who use the playground.

Daily

_____ Rake loose fill surfacing to insure adequate depth and reduce the risk of the
surfacing material becoming compacted.
_____ Remove trash and other debris from around and under the playground structure.
_____ Remove trash and debris from the surrounding areas of the playground.

Weekly

_____ Make sure that there are no sharp corners, edges or points.
_____ There are no missing or damaged protective caps or plugs.
_____ All hardware is secure and in its proper place.
_____ Check to be sure that all fasteners, S hooks and clevises are secure.
_____ There are no missing screws, bolts or any other fasteners.
_____ S hooks, clevises and other fasteners are not worn.
_____ None of the pipe is loose and able to turn in its footing.
_____ There are no tripping hazards such as: exposed footings, rocks, roots, or any

other obstacles in the play or surrounding areas.

_____ There are no potential entanglement hazards.
_____ There are no hazardous protrusions or projections.
_____ There are no broken, worn or missing components
_____ There are no broken or cracked welds.
_____ All equipment is securely anchored.
_____ There are no pinch, crush, shearing points or exposed moving parts.

The inspector should record in detail, all actions taken and list all maintenance
performed to keep the playground safe for use by children. Each inspection report
should be signed by the inspector and dated.
