RAP 2.41 Rotary Gripper Motor
Outputs 8, 11, 19
A stepper motor is used to rotate the gripper as-
sembly in order to perform the top and bottom
book cuts. Output 19 enables (turns on) the mo-
tor. Output 11 indicates to the stepper controller
which direction the motor should rotate. Output
8 indicates to the stepper controller how many
steps the motor should rotate. The stepper mo-
tor is located on the gripper assembly, Figure
2-66. The stepper controller is located on the
power panel near the upper right corner, Figure
2-67.

Initial Actions
Check for loose or broken wires 32, 57, and 66
at the power panel.
Check for blown fuses F8 and F12 on the main
PWB (Figure 2-2).
Perform RAP 2.27 Gripper Rotator Lock Cylin-
der to make sure lock cylinder is functioning
properly.
Check dip switches on the motor controller and
make sure they match settings shown in Figure
2-67.
Procedure
1. Switch on the machine.
2. Check the encoder wire connector, Figure
2-66. Is there 5 VDC between wires 7 and 8
at the encoder wire connector?
Y N
Check for loose or broken wires 7 and 8.
3. Is there 5 VDC between wires 7 and 8 at the
main PWB?
Y N
Go to RAP 2.6 DC Power and check the 5
VDC circuit.
4. Does the voltage between either 8 and 11 or
8 and 12 change between 0 and 5 VDC
while the encoder is turned manually?
Y N
Disconnect main power and replace the en-
coder (PL 5.6 Main Assembly 59000 (6/12)).
5. Check the power LED on the stepper motor
controller. Is the LED on?
Y N
Replace stepper motor controller.
6. Manually push the gripper assembly forward
into the area where it is free to rotate. Lo-
cate the dip switches on the stepper motor
controller, Figure 2-67. Move the test switch
to the “on” position. Does the gripper rotate
approx. 45° back and forth?
Y N
Replace the stepper motor controller and the
stepper motor.
7.
Move the test switch back to the “off” posi-
tion.
8. Disconnect main power and replace the
main PWB (REP 4.22 Main PWB Replace-
ment).
