Virtually all lens manufacturers claim their lenses are light-
weight and compact. But unless lenses are sharp and well-
balanced, the purpose of this feature is defeated. Since there
are inherent factors limiting the degree to which lenses can be
reduced in size, images will deteriorate at full aperture if these
limits are exceeded. When buying any lens, look out for lens
barrels which feel stiff and don't rotate as smoothly as FD
lenses during focusing and zooming. Also beware of lenses
which have rattles or stiff focusing/zooming rings now — they
often cause problems later on. The true test of a lens is how
well it wears with use, and FD lenses pass this test with flying
colors.
