Using the EOS Rebel XS/1000D

✦

Depth of Field Preview button.

Press this button to stop down, or
adjust, the lens diaphragm — the
opening at the back of the lens —
to the current aperture to preview
the depth of fi eld in the viewfi nder.
The larger the area of darkness in
the viewfi nder, the more extensive
the depth of fi eld will be. At the
lens’s maximum aperture, the
Depth of Field Preview button can-
not be depressed because the dia-
phragm is fully open. The aperture
cannot be changed as long as the
Depth of Field Preview button is
depressed. You can also preview
depth of fi eld when using the Live
View function.

✦

Lens Release button.

 Press and

hold this button to disengage the
lens from the lens mount by turning
the lens to remove it.

Top camera controls

Controls on the top of the camera enable
you to use the thumb and index fi nger  on
your right hand to control common adjust-
ments quickly. Here is a look at the top cam-
era controls.

✦

Mode dial.

This dial enables you to

switch among shooting modes by
lining up the mode you want with
the white mark beside the dial.

✦

ISO Speed button.

 Press this but-

ton to set the ISO setting, which
determines the sensor’s sensitivity
to light in Creative Zone modes
such as P (Program AE [Auto
Exposure]), Tv (Shutter-priority
Time value), Av (Aperture-priority
Aperture value), and M (Manual).
You can select Auto where the
camera automatically sets the ISO
from 100 to 800, or you can set it

Front camera controls

The front of the camera has controls and
connections that you’ll use often, including
the Lens Release button, lens mount index
marks, the Flash Pop-up button, and the
Depth of Field Preview button.

The front camera controls, from the left to
right side, include the following:

✦

Shutter button.

 Pressing this but-

ton halfway down sets focus and
initiates metering and exposure cal-
culation, and pressing it completely
fi res the shutter to make an expo-
sure.

✦

Red-eye reduction/Self-timer
lamp.

This red lamp fl ashes to

count down the seconds to shutter
release when the camera is set to
one of the Self-timer modes.

✦

EF and EF-S lens mount index
markers.

 Use these markers on the

lens mount to line up the lens
when you mount it on the camera.
Use the red EF lens mount index
for all EF lenses that have a red
marker on the lens, and the white
EF-S lens mount index for EF-S
lenses that have a white marker on
the lens. The lens that comes with
the XS/1000D is an EF-S lens
designed specifi cally for the smaller
image sensor size of the Rebel. But
Canon’s EF lenses also work per-
fectly on the XS/1000D.

✦

Built-in fl ash and Flash Pop-up
button.

The fl ash provides illumina-

tion either as the main light source
or as a fi ll fl ash. In Basic Zone
modes such as Full Auto, Portrait,
Landscape, and so on, the fl ash
fi res automatically. In Creative Zone
modes such as P, Tv, Av, and so on,
pressing the Flash Pop-up button
raises the fl ash for use.
