The IR-SS is designed to protect the sensor from rapid changes of temperature 

caused by direct exposure to the sun which can lead to transient errors in 

temperature measurement. It can reduce direct heating of the sensor by the sun by 

as much as 10

°

C. It also gives some protection from exposure to rain and snow. The 

IR-SS is made from high grade UV stable plastic and has plastic mounting fittings 

internally to prevent heat conduction with the outside of the tube. It has a 6 mm 

threaded stainless steel mounting hole.

A mounting arm (009905) is available to hold the sensor out from the side of a 

Campbell Scientific instrument tripod or tower. The sensor can be mounted directly 

on this arm or for best accuracy when it is fitted inside an IR-SS Solar Shield.
