Therearemultiplewaystocleanfibre-
opticcablesandconnectors.Included
belowaresomehelpfultips:
• Donotallowtheendofthefibreoptic
cabletomakecontactwithanysurface.
• Donotexcessivelybendthefibrecable
asthismaycauseinternalbreaksalong
thefibreresultinginpoorperformance
orinstability.
• Opticsandopticcoatingsareeasily
chippedand/orscratched.Useof
fingercotsorpowderfreesurgical
gloveswhilehandlingfibreopticcables,
willhelpensurecleanliness.
• Onlyfresh(dry)spectroscopicgrade
isopropylalcoholshouldbeusedasa
cleaningsolvent.
• Ensurethatthemodulepoweris
offandthatotherlightsourcesare
disabled.
CleaningProcedure
1. Blowthefibresurfacewithastream
ofcleandryair,thiswilldislodgelarger
looseparticles.
2. Place1-3dropsofspectroscopicgrade
isopropylalcoholinthecentreofalens
tissue.
3. Holdthefibrebytheconnectoror
cable,placethewetportionofthelens
tissueontheopticalsurfaceandslowly
dragitacross.
4. Examinethesurfaceofthefibreend
underhighintensitylightusingadirect
magnifyinginspectionmicroscope
oranindirectvideoinspectiontoolif
available.Ifstreaksorcontaminants
stillremain,repeattheprocessusinga
freshlenstissue.
5. Immediatelyinstallaprotectivecover
overtheendofthecabletoavoidre-
contaminationorinsertthefibreback
intothepreviouslycleanedreceptacle
forimmediateuse.

• Donottipthecanofcleandryair
whilstaerosolsprayingasliquidmaybe
releasedcontaminatingthesurfaceof
thefibre.
• Donotusedrylenspaperasitis
extremelyabrasive.
• Donotuseacetoneasacleaning
solventonthefibreopticalsurfaces.
• Toensurethepurityoftheisopropyl
alcohol,donotinsertthelenstissue,
swabs,etcintotheliquid,instead,drip
theliquidontothematerial.

istoremoveparticlesusingastreamof
cleandryair.Includedbelowaresome
helpfultipstoproperlycleanfibreoptic
modules:
• AlwayshandleopticalSFPmodulesin
anESDsafemannerusingtheproper
safetyprecautions.
• Ensurethatthemoduleispoweredoff
andhandlethemoduleswithcare.
• Alwaysusecleandryairoranapproved
cannedcompressedairsupply.
• Alwaysholdthecanofcompressedair
upright.Tippingmayreleaseliquids
intotheairstream.
• Donottouchtheinnersurfacesofthe
moduleincludingtheOpticalSub-
Assemblies(OSA),orinsertanyforeign
objectsintotheports.
• Useoffingercotsorpowderfree
surgicalglovesarenotrequiredbut
maybeusedforcleanliness.
CleaningProcedure
Withthecleandryair,blowtheinner
barrelofthetransmitterandreceiver
OpticalSub-Assemblies(OSA).Thiswill
dislodgelooseparticles.
ExaminethesurfaceoftheOSAlens
underhighintensitylightusingan
inspectionmicroscope.Ifcontaminants
stillremain,repeattheprocess.
