The Windows 8.1 interface
Start screen:
The Start screen is the launching pad to access your
favourite apps and websites at a touch.
To access this screen, press the Windows button
on the side of the tablet, or swipe in from the right
edge of the screen and tap Start.
Swipe down to view all your apps.
Search the web, within an app, or your tablet for apps,
settings, files.
Share items (links, photos...).
This takes you to the Start screen or, if already on the
Start screen, returns you to your last app.
Manages your hardware or a quick way to send files
and info to other devices connected to your tablet
(e.g. printer, phone, projector).
This allows you to have quick access to your tablet’s
settings (volume, brightness, connecting to the
Internet, and more).
Windows charms
Swipe your finger from the right edge of the screen to the left.
You can customize your Start screen by swiping down from the edge of the
screen for more options. You also have the ability to pin apps, contacts and
more to keep them handy. For more information please see ‘Getting familiar
with Windows’ page 14.
