Using Your E-TEC Outboard
Move the shift lever to NEUTRAL. Refer to
Grasp tilt grip on engine cover and tilt out-
board to the full tilt position.

Twist throttle grip to slowest idle position.

Starting
While seated, grasp the starter handle and
pull slowly until the starter engages, then pull
hard. Repeat, if needed, until outboard starts.
To prevent damage to starter
assembly, allow starter cord to rewind be-
fore releasing starter handle.

IMPORTANT:
Engine will not start if outboard
is in gear or if lanyard is not in place.
If your outboard does not react normally to
this starting procedure or if it fails to start, re-
fer to
Troubleshooting
on page 43.
After Engine Starts
Check the water pump indicator. A steady
stream of water indicates the water pump is
working. If a steady stream of water from the
water pump indicator is not visible, stop the
engine. Refer to
Engine Overheating
on
page 29.
WARNING
Always shift to NEUTRAL before
starting the outboard to prevent
sudden boat movement, which can
cause injury.
DO NOT
advance the throttle before start-up.
Advancing the throttle overrides the electron-
ic idle control system. After the engine starts,
the engine management module (
EMM
) au-
tomatically increases idle speed slightly. Idle
speed will decrease as the engine warms up.
