10. Carefully inspect air filter cartridge. Replace if any
damage is observed.
11. Inspect seal (
I
) for cuts, tears, holes, or general
deterioration. Replace as necessary.
12. Install air filter cartridge and seal onto air cleaner
base.
131
132
13. Install air cleaner cover (
J
) onto air cleaner base.
Alternately tighten two thumbscrews (
K
) until snug,
but do not over-tighten.
14. Inspect duckbill air valve (
L
) for cuts, tears, holes,
or general deterioration. Replace if damaged or
missing. Install duckbill air valve on air inlet port of air
cleaner base.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Engine operation without the
duckbill air valve can reduce filter efficiency by as
much as 50 percent.
Low Profile Air Cleaner (If Equipped)
1. Wash air cleaner cover, air cleaner base, and duckbill
air valve in warm, soapy water, or use a soft bristle
brush and a portable hand vacuum to remove all dust
and dirt.
2. See Figure 133. Hang gasket (
A
) on two pins next to
mounting flange of air cleaner base, so that tab on
gasket is at the bottom with the company logo facing
outside.
NOTE:
Improper gasket installation will block the
carburetor float bowl vent. The engine will not run if
the float bowl vent is blocked. See top inset of Figure
3. Install breather hose to port on air cleaner base.
Verify that tab on valve cover side of breather hose is
at the top as shown in Figure 132.
4. Install air cleaner base (
B
) onto carburetor mounting
studs.
5. Install two hex flange nuts (
C
) onto carburetor
mounting studs. Tighten nuts to
30-50 lb-in
(3.4-5.7
N-m).
6. Capturing cylinder heat shield, install screw (
D
) to
fasten air cleaner base to cylinder head. Tighten
screw to
40-60 lb-in
(4.5-6.8 N-m).
7. Install bottom support bracket screw with hex nut (
E
)
to air cleaner base and tighten to
40-60 lb-in
(4.5-6.8
N-m).
8. Install bottom support bracket screw (
F
) to crankcase
capturing cylinder heat shield and blower housing.
Tighten screw to
80-110 lb-in
(9-12.4 N-m).
9. Install trim panel (
G
) onto inside carburetor mounting
stud. Start hex flange nut (
H
) onto stud.
10. Level trim panel 0°±2°. Install hex flange screw (
I
)
to fasten trim panel and air cleaner base to control
bracket. Tighten screw to
30-50 lb-in
(3.4-5.7 N-m).
11. Tighten hex flange nut on inside carburetor mounting
stud to
25-35 lb-in
(2.8-4 N-m).
12. Install two standoffs (
J
) onto carburetor studs.
Tighten standoffs to
30-50 lb-in
(3.4-5.7 N-m).
13. Install bracket (
K
) onto standoffs. Install two hex
flange nuts (
L
) and tighten to
30-50 lb-in
(3.4-5.7 N-
m).
