Mixing Your Tracks Using the
Mastering Tool Kit
When you want to create an audio CD, combine (or
“bounce”) all of your recorded tracks onto to a set of
stereo tracks using a process called “mixing down.”
Mixing Down to Tracks 7/8
1. Press the REC MODE button repeatedly until
“Rec Mode>BOUNCE” appears onscreen.
2. Turn the TIME/VALUE select Tracks 7/8—shown
onscreen as “78V1”—for mixdown.
3. Press ENTER/YES.
4. Press the REC button so it flashes red, and then
press PLAY to begin mixing down.

The round STATUS lights for your playback
tracks are lit green—if you like, you can move
them to adjust your track levels as the song
plays.
6. STOP when you’ve reached the end of the song,
or the point at which you want to stop the
mixdown.
7. Press ZERO and then PLAY to play back the mix
on Tracks 7/8.
Mastering with the MTK Effects
After to mixing down, “mastering” uses the BR-864’s
MTK effects—“MTK” stands for “Mastering Tool
Kit”—to help make your mix sound like a
professionally recorded CD.
1. Press the REC MODE button so “Rec
Mode>MASTRING” appears onscreen.
2. Turn the TIME/VALUE dial to select
Source:78V1, and then press ENTER/YES—the
screen now shows “Target:78V2.”
3. Press ENTER/YES.
4. Press the COSM EFFECTS button to display the
MTK effect list. MTK>P01:Mix Down (MSTR
TOOL KIT) appears by default.
5. Cursor to “01”
and turn the TIME/VALUE dial
to select the desired preset MTK effect.
6. Press EXIT/NO to return to the main screen.
7. Press REC to go into Recording Standby mode,
and then press PLAY to start recording—
mastering begins.
8. When the BR-864 reaches the end of the song,
press STOP.
9. Play back Tracks 78V2 to listen to the mastered
tracks.
Saving BR-864 Track Data in
.WAV or AIFF Format
The BR-864 can export any track data into .WAV or
AIFF files that can be saved on a computer. After
converting the mastered tracks to .WAV or AIFF files,
any computer with CD burning software can create
audio CDs from them.
Note
: In order to perform the following procedure,
you must have enough room on your memory card
for the BR-864 to create a copy of the selected tracks
in the desired format. If you don’t—and you’ve got a
Windows computer—you can use the free BR Series
Wave Converter Version Two software available at
www.RolandUS.com
instead.
1. Connect the computer to the BR-864 using the
USB cable.
2. Press the BR-864’s USB button.
3. Turn the TIME/VALUE dial to select
Type:EXPORT, and then press ENTER/YES.
4. Cursor left or right to select the desired file
format: .WAV (Windows) or AIFF (Mac).
5. Press ENTER/YES.
6. Use the CURSOR buttons and/or the
TIME/VALUE dial to select the track you’d like to
convert to .WAV or AIFF.
7. Press ENTER/YES—the audio is exported to the
computer and converted to the selected format.
8. If you’re using a:

Windows PC
—go to “My Computer” and
double-click the Boss_BR-864 or
Removable Disk icon.
•
Mac
—double-click the Boss_BR-864 icon.
9. Drag the .WAV or AIFF file from the BR-864’s
USB folder to the computer’s desktop.
