KNG Portable radios are manufactured to meet IP67 specifications for dust and
water protection. disassembly of the radio may compromise the integrity of this
protection. the knG’s ip67 rating cannot be guaranteed on radios serviced by
non-factory personnel.

5.1 introduction
This maintenance section contains test and alignment procedures for an operational BK Radio
KNG radio. This section also contains troubleshooting and assembly/disassembly procedures. An
understanding of the theory of operation is recommended before maintenance is attempted. All kits and
programming items are available from RELM/BK Radio.
5.2 teSt equipment required
RF Signal Generator: HP8640B or equivalent

Distortion Analyzer: HP334A or equivalent
•
RF Voltmeter (optional): Boonton 92C or equivalent
•
RF Power Meter: HP435B with 30 dB pad or equivalent
•
Service Monitor: HP8920A Service Monitor or equivalent
•
Digital Multimeter: Fluke 8012A or equivalent
•
Computer IBM PC or Compatible, with an USB 2.0
•
KAA0710 Programming Kit
•
KAA0730 Programming Software
•
5.3 aliGnment procedureS
All alignment functions in KNG portable radios are performed electronically. You will need the KNG Editor
Software and programming cable, available from BK Radio. Refer to the KNG Editor Help file for more
details on using the program.
5.3.1 teSt Setup
Mount the radio in a suitable fixture containing an adapter for supplying 10 VDC from a negative ground
power supply. The automated test program, included as part of the KAA0730 programming software, will
automatically set the proper frequencies etc. required for radio each tuning process.
Refer to Figures 5-1, 5-2 and 5-3 for Transmitter and Receiver Test Setup. These figures show the
interface between test equipment and the radio.
