Modem Hardware Installation
Before conne cting the 56USBSL modem we r ecomm end re moving any
previous modem drivers, har dware, and software from your system.
1 . Turn on the power to your computer and wait for the desktop to
a p p e a r.
2 . C onnec t one end of the supplied USB cable into a n available
USB port on your system. (Note: A USB hub can also be used.
The USB hub must be a powered USB hub.)
3 . C onnec t the remaining end of the USB cable into the USB port
on the 56USBSL m o d e m .
4 . You will be notif ied that Windows found new har dware.
C ontinue to the next step only if the found new hardware wizard
a ppears. Do n o t continue if the wizard does not appear. Instead
you may want to try a different USB port to see if that m ay
r esolve the problem.
5 . C l i c k the C A N C E L button when the wiz ard appears.
Connec t the Telephone Cable
Insert one e nd of the supplied telephone c able into the tele phone line
wall outlet and insert the opposite end of the c able into the connector
marked RJ-11 on the ba ck of the modem.
Modem Driver Installation for Windows 98/ME/2000/XP
1 . I nsert the Best Da ta Installation disc into your CD-R OM drive.
An installation menu will appear if auto-run is enabled on your
C D-ROM drive .
NOTICE 1: If auto- run is not e nabled you can double click
the My Compu ter icon on your desktop, d ouble click the
icon r epresenting your C D - R O M drive, and double click the

NOTICE 2: If you receive an err or about a m issing file or out
of date file you should first double click the
R U N T I M E . E X E icon on the CD and then repeat step 1 when
c o m p l e t e .
2 . F rom the Installation menu single click the install modem
d r i v e r l i n k. While the driver is being installed you will se e a
progre ss bar indicator. When the ba r disappears the driver
installation is complete.
NOTICE 1: Windows 2000 may inform you tha t the driver
is not digitally signed. You must click Y E S to install the
d r i v e r.
NOTICE 2: Windows XP may inform you tha t the driver has
not passed Windows logo testing. You must click Continue
A n y w a y to install the driver.
NOTICE 3: If you have Windows 2000 or Windows XP
insta lled and receive either of the above poste d notices
please do not be concer ned with the actua l text of the
messa ge. The message only implies that Microsoft has not
personally tested the drivers and approved them for use.
H o w e v e r, Best Data has thoroughly te sted the drivers prior
to the rele ase of the product. The product uses a Smartlink
chipset. Smartlink has also verified full functionality in
these operating system s.
3 . Some versions of Windows may prompt you to restart the
c o m p u t e r. Click y e s to restart if you are pr ompted. This
concludes the modem driver installation.
