Paint Removal

WARNING: Before starting a paint blowing process you should determine if the paint you

are removing contains lead. This can be done by the local health department or a

professional using a paint analyzer to check the lead content of the paint to be

removed.

Extreme care should be taken when blowing paint on the wall. Paint peels, residues and

fumes may contain lead, which is considered a poison. Be extremely careful with the

contact of your hands with your mouth after handling the removed paint, as this can

result in the intake of lead which, even at lower levels of this substance, can cause

irreversible damage to the brain and nervous system; minor and unborn children are

particularly vulnerable. The blowing of lead-based paints should be performed only by

a professional and paint should not be removed using a heat gun.

1. Take the workpiece outdoors. If this is not possible, keep the work area well

ventilated. Open the windows and use an air extractor or fan. Make sure the fan is

moving the air from the interior to the exterior of the work area.

2. Remove or cover carpets, rugs, furniture, clothing, cooking utensils and air pipes.

3. Put isolating cloths in the work area to collect paint layers and peeling. Wear

protective clothing such as work shirts, overalls and hats.

4. Work in one room at a time. Take the furniture out or place them in the center of the

room and cover them. Work areas must be closed, covering hallways with insulating

cloths.

5. Children, potentially pregnant women and nursing mothers should not be exposed to

the work area until the work is finished and the room has been thoroughly cleaned.
