Status indication/error monitoring
During the measurement signal strength and consistency
and plausibility of the absolute position are continuously
monitored.
The sensor status is indicated either through the interface
(see Section 6 bis 8) or by the Status LED. Depending on
the interface used the status is interpreted more or less
accurately.
The LED shows the status in three different levels:
LED color Status
Description
Green
Normal
System working normally
Yellow
1)
Warning
Measuring signal quality is
poor
Red
Error
System or measuring error
1)
Measuring signal quality is only supported by the BiSS C, SSI and
Smart Sensor profile Ed. 2 Enhanced.
Warning (indicated by yellow LED)
– Signal quality monitoring: The signal quality drops
below a certain threshold as soon as the sensor leaves
the recommended working area. The sensor remains
fully functional, but the application should be checked
for verification.
Error (indicated by red LED)
– Plausibility check: If there is a plausibility check error for
the absolute position or if the signal quality of the
measuring signal is much too low, the LED will come
on red. This error can be cleared and disappears as
soon as the plausibility check is again correct.
– Sensor outside the measuring range: The sensor is
being operated outside the taught measuring range
limits or the active measuring surface has left the tape
in the travel direction.
– System error: The sensor head is defective or was
incorrectly configured.
For more information about possible error
sources, see Section 13.2 on page 48.
It is also possible to read the communication status from
the LED:
LED state
Description
Static
No communication
Flashing

Startup
5.1
Starting up the system
DANGER
Uncontrolled system movement
When starting up, if the linear head system is part of a
closed loop system whose parameters have not yet been
set, the system may perform uncontrolled movements.
This could result in personal injury and equipment
damage.
►
Persons must keep away from the system’s
hazardous zones.
►
Startup must be performed only by trained technical
personnel.
►
Observe the safety instructions of the equipment or
system manufacturer.
1.
Check connections for tightness and correct polarity.
Replace damaged connections or devices.
2.
Turn on the system.
3.
Make count direction, offset and measuring range
settings.
The setting possibilities vary according to
the interface (see Section 6 to 8).
4.
Checking function.
