Fgure 2.7.1 shows the gnton shutdown swtch, f
your boat has one. The purpose of the swtch s to
shut down the engne f the operator unntentonally
leaves the helm staton. stuatons n whch ths
could occur are rough water, bad weather and other
adverse boatng condtons. In these stuatons, the
safety of the boat and ts passengers s enhanced
by usng the gnton shutdown swtch, snce the boat
wll stop when the operator can no longer control
the boat.
however, unexpected engne shutdown may result
n unntentonal harm. For example, a passenger
may lose balance and fall, or control could be lost
during docking. No specific guidelines can be given
for swtch use. The ultmate decson of when to use
an gnton shutdown swtch rests wth the operator
or owner.
When the swtch s used, the operator must securely
clp the lanyard to ther belt or clothng so that f the
operator falls overboard or nto the boat, the swtch
s actvated and the engne shuts down.
To reset gnton shutdown swtch after t has been
actvated, smply renstall the swtch clp above
the shut-off switch and flip the switch to the "UP"
poston.

The Engne Operator's Manual wll tell you f your
engne s equpped wth an audble alarm and how
to use t.
The alarm ndcates a problem wth engne water
temperature, ol pressure and/or stern drve ol
level.

The tachometer (see Fgure 2.7.2) ndcates the
revolutons per mnute (RPM) of the engne (t does
not ndcate the speed of the boat). your Engne
Operator's Manual ndcates the maxmum full
throttle RPM at whch your engne should operate.
Ths must not be exceeded or serous engne
damage wll occur. The tachometer should also
be used to determne the most comfortable and
economcal crusng RPM.
The hour meter measures cumulatve hours of
operatng tme on the engne. Use the hour meter
to keep a careful log of when to mantan the engne
as well as to estmate fuel consumpton. Do not
leave gnton key n the "On" poston wth engne
off, because the hour meter wll contnue to run,
even though the engne s not operatng.
Always check oil pressure and water gauges
while moving, even if your engine has an
alarm.
Shut down engine immediately if gauges are
not in normal ranges, or alarm sounds.
Do not restart engine until problems are
corrected.
