7. Installation and commissioning
WARNING:
Prior to installation make sure that all pressurized lines involved in the installation are
isolated, depressurized and drained before starting any work. Failure to do so may result in
sudden pressure release and subsequent severe injury or death.
It is essential that the user of the valve is aware of the weight of the components and/ or
assemblies that must be handled and manipulated during installation and maintenance. It is the
users
’ responsibility to ensure that safe working practices are followed at all times.
Before installing the valve into the pipeline:
Only suitably qualified and experienced engineers should install valves
All special packing material must be removed
When large valves are provided and lifting lugs, plates or eye nuts, these must be used to lift the
valve.
Before installation, ensure that the pipeline and valve are completely free of debris or foreign
matter (the pipeline should be flushed out if possible).
Check direction of operation.
Fit the valve into the pipeline with direction of flow ‘arrow’, cast on the side of the body, pointing
in the direction of flow of the system. In horizontal or sloping pipelines, to ensure free movement
of the swinging discs, the disc hinge pins must be horizontal. This is achieved when the valve is
installed with the top stopper cover uppermost.
Check the mating flange facings (both valve and pipe-work flanges) for correct gasket contact
face, surface finish and condition. If a condition is found which might cause leakage, do not
attempt to assemble until the condition has been corrected.
Check the gasket material. For flange joints using low strength bolting, such as may be provided
for iron flanges, metal gaskets (flat, grooved, jacketed, corrugated or spiral wound) should not be
used.
Check the gaskets for freedom from injurious defects or damage.
The support base for the valve should be constructed of an adequate structure and material to
support the weight of the valve and/or forces acting upon it.
Once the valve has been installed into the pipeline:
When the pipeline has been charged, inspect the valve for any leaks and adjust as necessary in
accordance with maintenance instructions.
All external debris and foreign matter should be cleaned off from the external surfaces of the
valve.
7.1 Installation
It is highly recommended to install a protection filter(C) as well as isolating valves(A,E) to facilitate
commissioning and maintenance. If necessary install an air vent(B) at inlet of control valve.
The distance to elbows must be kept to a minimum of 5 x DN, upstream or downstream.
Typical installation:
A- Isolation valve upstream
B- Air vent
C- Filter
D- S869 Pressure Sustaining/Relief Valve
E- Isolation valve downstream
