Weatherproofing ODU Cable Grounds
The cable ground kits include rolls of butyl mastic and vinyl tape to weatherproof the
ground-wire connections on the ODU cable. A two-layer wrap process is
recommended:
• An initial layer of mastic. It is this tape that provides the weatherproofing.
• A top layer of vinyl tape to support good amalgamation and adhesion of the mastic
tape and to provide UV protection.
CAUTION:
Before it is weatherproofed, ensure all moisture is kept away
from the cable ground.
Wrapping Guidelines, Mastic (Butyl Rubber) Tape
1. Ensure the ground-wire connection on the ODU cable is correctly attached,
with
the ground wire facing down
.
2. Ensure that the ground connection and that the cable jacket each side of the
connection are free from all grease and dirt. If necessary, clean with a rag lightly
moistened with alcohol based cleaner.
3. Wrap with mastic tape using a half to 2/3rds width overly, and ensure there is at
least a 25 mm attachment onto the cable jacket to both sides of the ground
connection.
• To ensure there is no possibility of water entering between the ODU cable and
its ground wire, first apply and form the mastic tape around the ground wire
where it lies against the ODU cable.
• Starting at the bottom, wrap the mastic tape in an overlapping pattern, slightly
stretching the tape as you wrap. By wrapping from the bottom you help to
ensure there are no ridges or pockets for water to sit in.
NOTE:
There must be a full seal of mastic tape onto the primary ODU cable
and ground wire jackets. It must be applied so that there is no
potential for water to penetrate into the cable.
4. Firm over by hand and squeeze the tape along its edges to form it to the connection.
Check that there is no possibility of water entry before proceeding to
the next step.
5. Cover the mastic tape with five layers of vinyl tape.
• Wrap from the bottom, with the first layer extending 25mm each side of the
mastic tape.
• Subsequent layers must extend no less than 25mm each side of the previous
layer.
• Wrap the tape in an overlapping pattern at not less than a half width, slightly
stretching the tape is you wrap, except
d
o not do not stretch for the last
two turns of the top (5th) layer
to prevent curl-back.
• Tightly squeeze the completed tape wrapping to ensure all layers are firm.
