Practicing Safe Behaviors
A safe workplace requires practicing the following
behaviors:
First aid:
Keep a well-stocked, accessible first aid kit
on site.
Inspect properly:
Consider transporting the machine
to a shop or enclosed area for periodic inspection.
Double up:
Although one person can start and stop
the 6710D, a good safety practice is to have more than
one person at a work site.
Instruct personnel:
The owner and operator must
make sure that support personnel, observers, or others
needing to enter the operating area or work site are
aware of potential hazards and are properly trained in
safe approaches to it. Admit only authorized personnel
to the operating zone.
Communicate visually:
Anyone needing to enter
the work area while the 6710D is operating must make
eye contact or other confirmed communication with the
operator, signaling their intent to approach, and
approach only when it is safe to do so.
Stand back:
Before starting the machine, inspect the
area for people and potential hazards. Make sure every-
one is well away from the operating area before starting
the diesel engine. Allow only trained personnel in haz-
ard zones. To estimate safe distances, see Figure 41 and
Figure 42 on page 56.
Shout warnings:
Before starting up, follow the rec-
ommended warning procedures of your site. The opera-
tor should look carefully in and around the machine,
shout a loud warning, wait and listen for 10 seconds,
repeat the shout and listen before starting the machine.
Stay alert:
After the 6710D is running at the required
speed, it can run under the supervision of the loader
operator who feeds material to it. Other trained support
personnel may need to be in the operating area. Every-
one must remain alert and actively avoid hazards.
Sound the horn:
Use the horn as needed to alert oth-
ers and to communicate. The
HORN
button allows the
operator, truck driver, or others to signal to anyone in
the area that important safety-related events are about to
occur.
Demolition and Disaster
Cleanup Operations
The following section provides additional job site safety
information that is specific to demolition and disaster
cleanup operations.
Note that deconstruction is considered a demolition and
is subject to OSHA Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)
29 Part 1926 for Labor.
Survey the job site before beginning operation:
•
Note if the structure is obviously older than 1978.
•
Visual survey of possible lead-based paint and
asbestos containing materials and other hazardous
materials.
•
Look for water, fire, or insect damage.
•
Check to see if flammable and combustible liquids
are stored, handled and used in and around the
worksite.
•
Establish a fire watch.
Hazardous Materials and Regulated
Substances
All solid waste material for processing by a horizontal
recycler must be screened and classified for the pres-
ence of hazardous waste or other regulated substances.
Hazardous materials and certain regulated substances
are known to be harmful to human health and the envi-
ronment when not handled properly, regardless of their
concentration. A non-comprehensive list of regulated
materials can be found in the Code of Federal Regula-
tions: 40 CFR Part 261, Subpart D.
A high potential exists for the presence of hazardous
materials or regulated substances at a job site involving
demolition or disaster waste clean-up. The dangers of
exposure to hazardous materials or regulated substances
exist for any people near such operations in addition to
the machine operator and truck drivers. It is not possible
to know the risk of exposure to hazardous materials or
regulated substances at any site without a complete
inspection and evaluation of the site by a qualified tech-
nician.
