Depending on the level of scale detail and if the engine is to be built as a stand
alone display
, additional materials may need to be added. Good results in
crankcase detail can be achieved by sheeting the crankcase formers with
basswood strips as opposed to balsa.
The wood will seal easier and give a
more realistic look when completed.
W
e have achieved very realistic finishes
by first coating the wood with several coats of white glue prior to painting with
an aluminum paint. Carburetor manifolds are painted on flying versions. If you are
building the kit as shown in the photographs as a museum display we can supply copper
and aluminum leaf for a realistic finish.
The addition of small 1-72 and 2-56
hardware details will complete the model.
Lar
ger scale kits may have a combination of wooden and fiber
glass cylinders.
These are to make it easier to mount your models engine inside the Mercedes.
Use the hollow fiber
glass cylinders for routing exhaust tubing as necessary
.
The two bamboo sticks are used to attach the formers together and can remain
inside the completed crankcase. For any one building a complete engine for a
flying model we will cut custom plywood motor mounts for electric and gas
motors for the material cost only
