Glossary
Battery
A battery is a portable power source. It generates electrical energy from a chemical reaction. In the field of
automotive technology, a starter battery is a starter for combustion engines and a traction battery is an
energy source for electric vehicles.
Boost converter
A boost converter, upwards converter, or step-up converter is a direct current converter in which the output
voltage is greater than the input voltage.
Buck converter
A buck converter, step-down converter, or downward controller, is a DC converter where the output voltage
is lower than the input voltage.
Cable
Cables and wires are used to transmit electrical energy and information, for example, as power cables or
network cables.
A wire is a single conductor while a cable is two or more insulated wires wrapped in one jacket. Multiple
conductors that have no insulation around them would be classified as a single conductor.
Cable shield
The cable shield is a conductive sheath of a cable or wire. It protects the conductor inside against
electromagnetic influences from outside. It also prevents electromagnetic radiation from escaping into the
environment. This radiation is caused by the transported signals or energy.
The cable shield consists of thin, mostly braided copper wires.
Current ripple and voltage ripple
Current ripples occur when the IGBT switches. Capacitors are used to smooth current ripple and voltage
ripple.
DC link
The DC link is for coupling several electrical networks. For this purpose, the DC link functions as an energy
store on an intermediate current or voltage level. Inverters ensure the electrical coupling of the DC link and
the electrical networks.
Derating
Derating is a power reduction due to external influences. This prevents damage to components from
excessively high temperatures. Example: If the temperature in a motor rises, the permissible torque of the
motor is limited. This reduces the power and prevents further heating of the motor.
