WARNING
As mentioned above, the brakes are the
most important safety system on your ve-
hicle. For your safety, they must be in
perfect repair, so they should be checked
every time you ride your vehicle.
Oil or other fluid on a disc will contami-
nate the brake pads. Dirty pads must be
discarded and replaced, a dirty or oily
disc must be cleaned with a high quality
degreaser.
Arrange with your Local
APRILIA
Delear
to flush the systems and change all of
the brake fluid once every two years.
NOTE
This vehicle is provided with front
and rear disc brakes with separate hy-
draulic systems.
NOTE
3
For the version with rear
drum brake
3
, the following information
refers to the front disc brake only.
When the pads wear out the brake fluid
level in the reservoir decreases to auto-
matically compensate for their wear.
The front brake fluid reservoir is located
on the right end of the handlebar near the
front brake lever (under the upper handle-
bar cover).
The rear brake fluid reservoir is located on the
left end of the handlebar near the rear brake
lever (under the upper handlebar cover).
Check the levels of the brake fluid in the
reservoirs, see also (FRONT AND REAR
BRAKE). Also, check the wear of the
pads, see p. 66 (CHECKING THE BRAKE
PAD WEAR), every 300 mi (500 km).
a
WARNING
Never use your vehicle if any portion of
either brake system is leaking.

they must always be perfectly working.

ADJUSTING THE BRAKE
◆
Measure the distance covered by the lever
before the brake starts it braking action.
The idle stroke at the end of the brake le-
ver must be about 0.39 in (10 mm).
To adjust the clearance:
◆
Rotate the adjuster (1). Rotating the ad-
juster nut clockwise decreases the clear-
ance.
◆
Apply the brake repeatedly and make
sure that the wheel turns freely after the
lever has been released.
