Although the main enclosure of the Mechelle is sealed and filled with Dry Nitrogen (or evacuated), air is also present in
the small space between the camera and the spectrograph in the shutter housing. This may reduce the throughput of
the spectrograph in the UV. This can be flushed out with dry gas to remove the water vapour. Flushing is done via the
two ports (1x each side of the camera flange, normally sealed by grub screws).

When larger fibre (>50 μm diameter) must be used, a combination of slit and fibre can be used. The slit will determine the
resolution of the spectrograph and the large fibre will ensure higher transmission of light. In this case the SMA connector
is removed, the slit disk is attached to the Mechelle then the SMA connector attached after the slit disk as shown below.
Optional FC and ST adapters (see
Section 2.3.1
) are fitted in the same way.
NOTE: After changing slit to fibre, the unit must be recalibrated.
