Installing Operating Systems
How you install an operating system depends on the hardware in your open
controller system. Table 6.C provides some guidelines.
Table 6.C
How to install operating systems
Operating system:
Considerations:
DOS
You can install DOS on one of the following:
•
an internal FlashDrive, CompactFlash, or microdrive
•
a PC Card in a PCMCIA interface module
•
a drive in an IDE interface module
Windows 3.x
You can install Windows 3.x on one of the following:
•
an internal FlashDrive, CompactFlash, or microdrive
•
a PC Card in a PCMCIA interface module
•
a drive in an IDE interface module
Windows 95
You can install Windows 95 on one of the following:
•
an internal FlashDrive, CompactFlash, or microdrive
•
an IDE-compatible device installed in an IDE interface module
IMPORTANT:
You can’t run or install Windows 95 from a PC Card in a
PCMCIA interface module
because the operating system requires full
access to the backplane and can’t work around the resources that are
assigned to the PCMCIA module. However, you can run Windows 95
from a PC card hard drive in an
IDE
(1747-OCIDE1) interface module.
Windows NT
You can install Windows NT on one of the following:
•
an embedded FlashDrive, CompactFlash, or microdrive
(180 Mbytes or larger)
•
an IDE-compatible device (180 Mbytes or larger) installed in an IDE
interface module
You can’t run or install Windows NT from a PC Card in a
PCMCIA
interface module
because the operating system requires full access to
the backplane and can’t work around the resources that are assigned
to the PCMCIA module. However, you can run Windows NT from a PC
card hard drive in an
IDE
(1747-OCIDE1) interface module.
