How To
Drop anchor:
1.
Make sure power for the windlass is on at the 12V DC breaker panel and that the windlass power
breaker has not tripped. (The windlass power breaker is located at the nav station opposite the generator
controls and adjacent to the house battery breaker)
2.
Make sure the hull-mounted ropes used to tie to the anchor chain after the anchor is down are clear
and accessible from the deck at the chain pulley.
3.
Position the boat a few boat lengths upwind of your desired location
4.
Check the depth!
5.
Let out chain (ideal ratio is at least 3:1). This can be done with the down control for the windlass.
There are 200 feet of chain and 50 feet of rope for the windlass. The chain is marked.
6.
After the anchor is down, reverse the engines to test its hold.
7.
Connect the two front hull-mounted ropes to the anchor chain, and let the chain out until the boat is
being supported by the ropes and not the windlass. This is necessary to prevent the boat from swinging.
Raise anchor:
1.
Use the windlass to pull in the chain until you can reach the connection from the two hull-mounted
ropes. Disconnect the ropes and tie them up so they are secure.
2.
Use the windlass to raise the anchor. DO NOT TRY TO PULL THE BOAT FORWARD USING
THE WINDLASS AS THIS MAY DAMAGE THE WINDLASS. RUN THE ENGINES TO MAKE
THE CHAIN SLACK BEFORE ACTIVATING THE WINDLASS.
3.
As you get near the position directly over the anchor, run the boat over the anchor position with
windlass off to free it, then turn on the windlass to retrieve it.
4.
When raising the anchor it is sometimes necessary to redistribute the chain in the anchor well to
assure the windlass will continue to operate. The hatch cover over the chain well should be open during
anchor raising so that the windlass operation and the chain distribution can be monitored.
Dinghy
The dinghy front hatch contains all the items related to the safe operation of the dinghy and the
operation of the Honda outboard motor including the earmuffs for flushing the outboard, an anchor with
chain and 50 feet of rope, spare engine oil, two life vests, some tools, and a bailing pump. The battery is
located under the rear seat, as is the fuel tank.
Dinghy launching and retrieving
This operation requires 2 people. Always use the davit only in calm water when the boat is not
moving, and always with 2 people. Please read the manual for davit operation!
1.
An electric winch on a swinging arm davit is used to launch and retrieve the dinghy. The
controller plugs into the socket at the base of the davit shaft, and it is kept in the bottom drawer at the
salon nav station to the right of the radio.
2.
A rotary breaker for the davit is located in the front cabinet at the starboard stairs (below the large
stainless steel column). It must be turned on.
3.
First lower the cable slightly so that the davit cable clasp can be freed from the storage hook on the
