5 Functional description Gouging torch

5 Functional description
The fastener (1) is used for clamping the carbon electrodes. The clamp levers
are protected by the insulating jaws (10) . The handle (7) contains the valve
seat for opening and closing the compressed air.
On the connector side, compressed air nozzles (5) (3/8 NPSI thread) of
different nominal diameters can be used.
The hollow cable (3) is used for the power and compressed air lines and may
or may not be equipped with a hinge (2) on the handle side. The hollow
cable's copper cord is connected to the distance adaptor using a screw-type
connection.
The compressed air valve (8) can be used to connect and disconnect the
compressed air. The carbon electrodes are clamped between the clamp lever
and the nozzle. The air openings on the nozzle
(9) point towards the arc.
5.1 Gouging
Plasma-arc gouging is used to remove or cut metal parts. A welding current
conducted through carbon electrodes produces a plasma arc that liquefies the
metal by melting it. The melt is air-blasted using a jet of compressed air directed
by nozzles.
