To connect the switch externally by means of an optical cable, Plastic
Fibre Optic or Glass Fibre Optic depending on the distance and the
environment.

Ethernet cables have to be placed on the roof of the switchgear. Also other
solutions can be used (that is using lateral side holes of the LV cubicle).
Do not use paths in the power part of the switchgear.

Example of complex topology
Fig. 6.3.7.-1 shows an example of complex topology in which several
network solutions are used.
The network is based on a star topology where a modular switch is used as a
backbone for the substation. This modular switch is then connected by an
optical uplink (glass fibre) to the control room and by optical links (plastic
fiber) to the two subnetworks.
Even if the modular switch is the backbone of the communication system, for
the cost reasons, the first subnetwork is directly connected to the modular
switch and not to a separate switch as in a real star topology.
