OPEN TANK LEVEL MEASUREMENT
In an open vessel, level can be measured by making a pressure
measurement (P) at the bottom of the vessel (Figs.
and
). The pressure at the trans (high pressure) connec-
tion is equal to the product of the height (h
2
) and the specific
gravity (SG) of the liquid. Since SG is known, and P is the mea-
sured pressure, then:
1. Refer to Figure
for a typical piping arrangement for
open tank level measurements.
2. Make the pressure connection to the + (high pressure) side
of the transmitter.
3. Leave the - (low pressure) side of the transmitter open to
the atmosphere.
NOTE: It is not unheard of for bees, wasps, spiders, and other
unwanted insects to make a home of the open low pressure process
connection. To prevent this, cover this connection with a fine screen
or cheese cloth.
