ATM Network
Examples
In this section, several examples of ATM networks and details of how they
are built are presented.
Classical IP ATM
Networks
You can use the CoreBuilder 9000 ATM Enterprise Switch in Classical IP
configurations to connect a workgroup.
You can use the CoreBuilder 9000 Enterprise Switch in a network using
the IP over ATM (IETF, RFC 1577) protocol to connect workstations,
servers, and routers. In this configuration, the CoreBuilder 9000 ATM
Enterprise Switch uses the basic ATM protocols (ILMI, Signalling, IISP) for
connecting workstations to the ATM network. You connect directly to the
CoreBuilder 9000 Enterprise Switch Workstations with ATMLink Adapters
supporting connectivity to SONET/SDH for S-BUS.
The CoreBuilder 9000
ATM Enterprise
Switch with a
Workgroup
Using IP over ATM, you implement the CoreBuilder 9000 ATM Enterprise
Switch as the high-speed connection for servers and workstations in a
workgroup. In this topology, servers and workstations with very high
bandwidth requirements for applications such as high speed imaging or
multimedia transmission are connected through ATM adapters to the
CoreBuilder 9000 ATM Enterprise Switch.
