ISP
Internet Service Provider. A company that
provides users with Internet access for a set
fee.
ITU-T
An international organization that defines
standards for telegraphic and telephone
equipment. The initials ITU-T represent the
French name. In English it is known as the
International Telegraph and Telephone
Consultative Committee.
NTSC
Acronym for National Television Standards
Committee. This is the organization which
determines the standards for broadcast and
some consumer level video production.
POTS (Plain-Old Telephone Service)
An acronym used by engineers to describe
transmission processes and protocols
involving regular analog phone lines. Analog
modems use POTS lines.
protocol
A system of rules and procedures governing
communications between two or more
devices. Protocols vary, but communicating
devices must follow the same protocol in
order to exchange data. Some of the
operations that may be defined in protocols
include data format, readiness to receive or
send, error detection, and error correction.
