50.1 Path MTU Overview
This chapt er int r oduces t he I Pv6 Pat h MTU t able.
The lar gest size ( in byt es) of a packet t hat can be t ransfer r ed over a dat a link is called t he
m axim um t ransm ission unit ( MTU) . The Swit ch uses Pat h MTU Discover y t o discover Pat h MTU
( PMTU) , t hat is, t he m inim um link MTU of all t he links in a pat h t o t he dest inat ion. I f t he Swit ch
r eceives an I CMPv6 Packet Too Big er r or m essage aft er sending a packet , it fragm ent s t he next
packet accor ding t o t he suggest ed MTU in t he er r or m essage.
