40.5 DHCPv6 Relay
A DHCPv6 r elay agent is on t he sam e net w or k as t he DHCPv6 client s and helps for war d m essages
bet w een t he DHCPv6 server and client s. When a client cannot use it s link- local addr ess and a w ell-
know n m ult icast addr ess t o locat e a DHCPv6 ser ver on it s net w or k, it t hen needs a DHCPv6 r elay
agent t o send a m essage t o a DHCPv6 ser ver t hat is not at t ached t o t he sam e net w or k.
The DHCPv6 r elay agent can add t he r em ot e ident ificat ion ( r em ot e- I D) opt ion and t he int er face- I D
opt ion t o t he Relay- For war d DHCPv6 m essages. The r em ot e- I D opt ion car r ies a user- defined st r ing,
such as t he syst em nam e. The int er face- I D opt ion pr ov ides slot num ber, por t infor m at ion and t he
VLAN I D t o t he DHCPv6 server. The r em ot e- I D opt ion ( if any) is st r ipped fr om t he Relay- Reply
m essages befor e t he r elay agent sends t he packet s t o t he client s. The DHCPv6 ser ver copies t he
int er face- I D opt ion fr om t he Relay- For war d m essage int o t he Relay- Reply m essage and sends it t o
t he r elay agent . The int er face- I D should not change even aft er t he r elay agent r est ar t s.
