Four 1000Base-T Et her net por t s ar e pair ed w it h a m ini- GBI C slot t o cr eat e a dual per sonalit y
int erface. The Swit ch uses up t o one connect ion for each m ini- GBI C and 1000Base-T Et hernet pair.
The m ini- GBI C slot s have priorit y over t he Gigabit por t s. This m eans t hat if a m ini- GBI C slot and
t he cor r esponding GbE por t ar e connect ed at t he sam e t im e, t he GbE por t w ill be disabled.
Not e: The dual per sonalit y por t s change t o fiber m ode dir ect ly w hen inser t ing t he fiber
m odule.
When aut o- negot iat ion is t ur ned on, an Et her net por t negot iat es w it h t he peer aut om at ically t o
det er m ine t he connect ion speed and duplex m ode. I f t he peer Et her net por t does not suppor t aut o-
negot iat ion or t ur ns off t his feat ur e, t he Swit ch det er m ines t he connect ion speed by det ect ing t he
signal on t he cable and using half duplex m ode. When t he Sw it ch’s aut o- negot iat ion is t ur ned off,
an Et her net por t uses t he pr e- configur ed speed and duplex m ode w hen m ak ing a connect ion, t hus
r equir ing you t o m ake sur e t hat t he set t ings of t he peer Et her net por t ar e t he sam e in or der t o
connect .
3.1.1.1 Default Ethernet Negotiation Settings
The fact or y default negot iat ion set t ings for t he Gigabit por t s on t he Sw it ch ar e:
• Speed: Aut o
• Duplex: Aut o
• Flow cont r ol: Off
• Link Aggr egat ion: Disabled
3.1.1.2 Auto-crossover
All por t s ar e aut o- cr ossover, t hat is aut o- MDI X por t s ( Media Dependent I nt er face Cr ossover ) , so
you m ay use eit her a st raight - t hr ough Et her net cable or cr ossover Et her net cable for all Gigabit por t
connect ions. Aut o- cr ossover por t s aut om at ically sense w het her t hey need t o funct ion as cr ossover
or st raight por t s, so cr ossover cables can connect bot h com put er s and sw it ches/ hubs.
3.1.2 Mini-GBIC Slots
These ar e slot s for m ini- GBI C ( Gigabit I nt er face Conver t er) t ransceiver s. A t ransceiver is a single
unit t hat houses a t ransm it t er and a r eceiver. The Sw it ch does not com e w it h t ransceiver s. You
m ust use t ransceiver s t hat com ply w it h t he Sm all For m - fact or Pluggable ( SFP) Transceiver
Mult iSour ce Agr eem ent ( MSA) . See t he SFF com m it t ee’s I NF- 8074i specificat ion Rev 1.0 for det ails.
You can change t ransceiver s w hile t he Swit ch is operat ing. You can use differ ent t ransceiver s t o
connect t o Et her net sw it ches w it h differ ent t ypes of fiber- opt ic or even copper cable connect or s.
To avoid possible eye injury, do not look into an operating fiber-optic
module’s connectors.
