Choosing a Procedure, Vacuum Level, and Use of Smart Flow
To choose a procedure and set the vacuum level for it, follow these steps:
1. Press the parameter button associated with the procedure (Surgical, Pharyngeal, Tracheal, or
CASS).
2.
Press the Confirm button to use the initial vacuum level for the procedure, or change it by
turning the Dial clockwise (to increase the vacuum level) or counterclockwise (to decrease
the vacuum level), then press the Confirm button.
3.
Turn Smart Flow ON or OFF, by pressing the Smart Flow parameter button, then turn the
Dial clockwise (Smart Flow ON) or counterclockwise (Smart Flow OFF). See the “Smart
Flow” and “Smart Flow Calibration” sections, in this chapter, for more information.
Intermittent Mode Operation
Intermittent Mode allows you to control the following parameters.
•
Vacuum level.
•
ON Time
•
OFF Time
The Intermittent Mode vacuum range, adult and pediatric initial vacuum level settings are:
CASS
The Continuous Aspiration of Subglottic Secretions (CASS) procedure uses
low level of vacuum applied either with a special endotracheal tube (ETT) or
with an adjunct to a standard endotracheal tube to provide suction during
mechanical ventilation. The vacuum removes the secretions that collect
above the cuff of the ETT that are known to increase the risk of ventilator
associated pneumonia (VAP).
