Enhanced Telephone Line Operation
Overview
When the
Telephone Control
selection in CPS is selected, the Model 4018/4118 console
telephone interface features hands-free enhanced telephone operation with automatic
audio routing between the telephone and radio channels. With this selection, the numeric
keypad is always live in the DTMF mode when the telephone is off hook. The Telephone
Control selection also incorporates a new answer/hold mode. This enhanced telephone
channel type is configured as a Local dual channel card connected to a telephone line
through a Zetron Series 4000 Phone Coupler. To facilitate the enhanced telephone option,
the
SELECT
,
ON HK/OFF HK
,
MUTE
, and
PATCH
buttons have the following
functionality.
Select (Answer/Hold)
The initial press of this button takes the telephone off hook and route the receive audio
from all radio channels to the console Unselect speaker. Console Mic audio is sent to the
telephone transmit output and the telephone receive input audio is sent to the console
Select speaker or headset. The console is now connected to the telephone line in a full-
duplex live audio mode. The button’s green LED is lit when the console audio is directed
to the telephone. The button’s red LED flashes when receive telephone audio is present if
the telephone is on hook. If the telephone is off hook, this button’s red LED indicates if the
telephone is locked out by another position. Although the receive audio from the Selected
radio channels no longer goes to the Select speaker, these radio channels still remain
Selected. To indicate this, the green LED on these Selected channel’s
SELECT
button
flashes.
Pressing this button again toggles the telephone into the Hold mode. All receive and
transmit telephone audio is then blocked, but the telephone remains off hook. The button’s
green LED flashes when Hold is active. If no other phone channels are active (off hook
and not in Hold mode), all radio audio is routed back to its normal destination and the
green LED on all Selected radio channel’s
SELECT
button returns to the on state.
Only one console position can acquire a telephone channel by taking the telephone off
hook with the
SELECT
(
ANSWER/HOLD
) button as described above. All other
positions are then denied access to that telephone channel. On these positions, this
button’s red LED is on and the green LED is off to indicate this mode. If the first position
puts the telephone into Hold mode, the green LED on all other positions also flash. The
telephone channel can now be acquired by any position. The first console to toggle the
telephone channel out of the Hold mode acquires the telephone and lock out all other
positions. This technique can be used to transfer a call between console positions.
As soon as one position takes a telephone off hook, all other positions mute that telephone
channel’s receive input audio. When the telephone channel is put back on hook (hung up),
all positions then unmute that telephone channel’s receive input audio. This function was
previously called
SELECT
and is still programmed that way in CPS.
