1. Securely support the motorcycle on a level sur-
face.
2. Operate the sidestand, and check its movement
and spring tension. Replace the spring if it is weak
or damaged.
3. Lubricate the sidestand pivot surfaces with lith-
ium soap grease.
4. Check the sidestand switch operation as follows:
a. Park the motorcycle on a level surface. Both
wheels must be on the ground.
b. Sit on the motorcycle and raise the sidestand.
c. Shift the transmission to neutral.
d. Start the engine and let it idle.
e. Pull in and hold the clutch lever. Shift the
transmission into gear.
f. While holding the clutch lever in, move the
sidestand down. The engine should stop.
g. If the engine does not stop when the sidestand
is lowered, inspect the sidestand switch as de-
scribed in Chapter Nine.
5. If the sidestand nut was loosened, torque it to 56
N•m (41 ft.-lb.).
GENERAL LUBRICATION
Swing Arm Bearings
Clean the swing arm bearings in solvent and pack
them with molybdenum disulfide grease at the in-
tervals specified in
Table 1
. The swing arm must be
removed to service the bearings. Refer to Chapter
Twelve.
Steering Stem Bearings
Remove, clean and lubricate the steering stem
bearings with lithium soap grease at the interval
specified in
Table 1
. Refer to the procedure in
Chapter Eleven.
Wheel Bearings
Worn wheel bearings cause excessive wheel
play that results in vibration and other steering
troubles. Inspect the wheel bearings at the inter-
vals specified in
Table 1
. Refer to the procedures
in Chapter Ten.
Miscellaneous
Unless otherwise indicated, lubricate the fol-
lowing items with lithium soap grease: O-rings, oil
seal lips, shift pedal shaft, brake pedal shaft, foot-
rest pivots, clutch lever, front brake lever, control
cable ends, and the sidestand bolt and sliding sur-
faces.
BATTERY
All the models covered in this manual are
equipped with a maintenance free, sealed battery so
the electrolyte level cannot be checked. Never at-
tempt to remove the sealing bar cap from the top of
the battery.
Since the negative side of the battery is grounded,
always disconnect the negative cable, then the posi-
tive cable, when removing the battery. This mini-
mizes the chance of a tool shorting to ground when
the positive cable is disconnected.
