5. Check the operation of the final gear assembly
by rotating the drive shaft. The shaft should turn
smoothly and should transfer motion through the
pinion gear assembly to the ring gear.
6. Drain the final gearcase oil as described in Chap-
ter Three. Check the oil for metal particles. Small
amounts of particles in the oil are normal. However,
large amounts of particles indicate bearing prob-
lems.
7. Remove the drive shaft assembly. Measure the
gear lash as described in this chapter.

1. Remove the final drive assembly as described in

2. Remove the final gearcase cover nuts (A,

3. Pull the cover/drive shaft assembly (B,

) from the final gearcase.
4. Remove the spring seated against the pinion gear
nut.
