Thank you for purchasing the Yamaha FW16E.
The FW16E is an expansion board based on the high-performance IEEE1394 serial bus and data communi-
cation protocol. The FW16E adds two IEEE1394 connectors to an FW16E-compatible device, such as the
Yamaha MOTIF XF Music Production Synthesizer. By connecting to a computer in a peer-to-peer connec-
tion via an IEEE1394 cable, you can transfer audio data for all channels and MIDI data for all ports simulta-
neously between the FW16E-equipped device and the computer.
In order to take full advantage of the FW16E’s functionality, please read this manual carefully. After read-
ing this manual, please keep it available for future reference.

• The illustrations and LCD screens shown in this Owner’s Manual are for instructional purposes only and

IEEE1394 connectors

These 6-pin IEEE1394 standard connectors enable you to connect the device to IEEE1394-compatible
(FireWire/i.LINK) computers.
If the connecting device features a 6-pin IEEE1394 connector, use a standard 6-pin to 6-pin IEEE1394
cable. If it features a 4-pin IEEE1394 connector, use a standard 6-pin to 4-pin IEEE1394 cable. Do not
connect the cables in a loop.

NOTICE

Be sure to connect the IEEE1394 cable plug to the IEEE1394 connector in the correct ori-
entation.

For optimum results, use an IEEE1394 cable shorter than 4.5 meters.

Specifications and appearance subject to change without notice.
