4. Run the engine at a fast idle for a few
minutes in neutral position.
WARNING!
Attach the engine shut-off cord to a
secure place on your clothing, or your
arm or leg while operating.Do not at-
tach the cord to clothing that could
tear loose. Do not route the cord
where it could become entangled,
preventing it from functioning.

NOTICE:
Never turn the main switch
to “ ” (start) while the engine is
running. Do not keep the starter motor
turning for more than 5 seconds. If the
starter motor is turned continuously
for more than 5 seconds, the battery
will be quickly discharged, thus mak-
ing it impossible to start the engine.
The starter can also be damaged. If
the engine will not start after 5 sec-
onds of cranking, return the main
switch to “
” (on), wait 10 seconds,
then crank the engine again.

5. Just prior to turning off the engine, quick-
ly spray “Fogging Oil” alternately into the
intake silencer or the fogging hole of the
silencer cover, if equipped. When prop-
erly done, the engine will smoke exces-
sively and almost stall.
TIP:
If “Fogging Oil” is not available, turn off the
engine. Remove the spark plug(s). Pour a tea-
spoonful of clean engine oil into each cylin-
der. Crank the engine several times manually.
Reinstall the spark plug(s).

Remove the flushing attachment.

Draining the gasoline from the vapor sep-
arator
Gasoline in the vapor separator must be
drained before storing the outboard motor.
Have a Yamaha dealer drain the gasoline
from the vapor separator.

Lubrication
1. Install the spark plug(s) and torque to
proper specification. For information on
spark plug installation, see page 67.
2. Change the gear oil. For instructions, see
page 75. Inspect the oil for the presence
of water that indicates a leaky seal. Seal
replacement should be performed by an
authorized Yamaha dealer prior to use.
3. Grease all grease fittings. For further de-
tails, see page 65.
TIP:
For long-term storage, fogging the engine
with oil is recommended. Contact your
Yamaha dealer for information about fogging
oil and procedures for your engine.

Flushing power unit
Perform this procedure right after operation
for the most thorough flushing.
NOTICE

Do not perform this procedure while the
engine is running. The water pump may be
damaged and severe damage from over-
heating can result.
1. After shutting off the engine, unscrew the
garden hose connector from the fitting
on the bottom cowling.
