Checking the big end oil clearance
1. Measure:
• Big end oil clearance
Out of specification

Replace crankshaft
pin bearing.
See “Selecting the crankshaft pin bearing”
(7-57).

a. Clean the crankshaft pin bearings, con-
necting rod, connecting rod cap, and
crankshaft.
b. Install the crankshaft pin bearings “1” into
the connecting rod “2” and connecting rod
cap “3”.
TIP:
• Install the crankshaft pin bearings in their
original positions.
• Install the protrusions “a” of the crankshaft pin
bearing into the grooves “b” on the connect-
ing rod “2” and connecting rod cap “3”.
c. Place a piece of Plastigauge (PG-1) on the
crankshaft pin, parallel to the crankshaft.
Do not place the Plastigauge (PG-1) over
the oil hole in the crankshaft pin of the
crankshaft.
d. Install the connecting rod “1” and connect-
ing rod cap “2” onto the crankshaft pin.
TIP:
• When checking the oil clearance, reuse the
removed connecting rod bolts.
• Make sure that the protrusions “a” on the con-
necting rod “1” and connecting rod cap “2”
face toward the flywheel magneto end of the
crankshaft.
• Do not turn the connecting rod until the big
end oil clearance measurement has been
completed.
e. Tighten the connecting rod bolts “3” to the
specified torques in 2 stages.
