Disassembling the manual starter

While holding the starter rope

, turn the

sheave drum

in the direction of the

arrow shown until there is no tension in
the spiral spring.

NOTE:

Push the starter plunger

in the direction of

the arrow shown while turning the sheave
drum

as shown.

Remove the drive plate

and drive pawl

spring 1

Remove the sheave drum

Remove the spiral spring

from the

manual starter cover.

WARNING

The spiral spring

can pop out. Cover

the spiral spring with rags when removing
it.

Remove the starter rope

and E-clip

and then remove the drive pawl

, drive

pawl spring 2

, and spring

from the

sheave drum

Checking the manual starter

Check the roller, collar, drive pawl, E-clip,
starter plunger, and drive plate. Replace
if cracked or damaged.

Check the springs. Replace if bent,
cracked, or damaged.
