6. Use a battery charger that is correct for the
battery. A battery charger that is set for an
ampere-hour rate that is too high will cause a high
internal heat and damage the battery. A low
ampere-hour rate setting on a battery charger can
require a longer charging time but will not
damage the battery. The provided charger
operates at a 20A/hr rate. Do not use a charger
above 100A/hr charge rate.
7. When batteries are moved, make sure a short
circuit does not occur. See the Safety Procedures
in Battery Maintenance of this section.
8. Do not store battery in direct sunlight. Doing so
can cause internal heating that accelerated aging
of the battery.
9. Keep in a cool, well-ventilated area in no higher
than 80% humidity, else accelerated oxidation
and rust can occur.
10. Ensure storage area has adequate fire detection
and mitigation system. Li-Ion batteries should
always be protected from fire. Ensure storage
area has immediate access to both a class D and
a class ABC fire extinguisher
11. Do not store batteries with other metallic goods
that can shift and possibly cause a short.
12. Do not store batteries for a longer period than 10
years.
Shipping and Handling
Li-Ion batteries have strict transportation regulations.
They are considered class 9 dangerous goods. If at
any time a battery must be sent for service, follow
handling, packing, and transportation mandates.
1. When shipping Lithium-Ion batteries by
themselves, follow UN3480. When shipped with
equipment follow UN3481.
2. NEVER alter, remove, deface, or obscure Li-Ion
warning labels.
3. When provided, always return batteries in the
packaging provided.
4. Shipping container must provide documentation/
indications that a Li-Ion battery is enclosed, a
statement of hazards, procedure if damaged, and
contact information. Shipping container cannot
exceed 30kg gross mass.
5. Package must be able to withstand a
1.2 m (3.9 ft) drop test, without damage to battery
contained within, or release of contents. (Inner
packaging layers recommended).
6. If shipping by air, see IATA provisions and
packaging instructions P965/966. Preference is
ground shipment.
7. If possible, ship a battery pack at no higher than
50% State of Charge (SoC).
8. It is recommended that dented cells or batteries
with dented cells be taken out of service. Dented
sides or ends increase the likelihood of a short
circuit.
9. Store suspected or damaged packs in a cool, dry,
well-ventilated area away from combustible
materials and away from other batteries.
10. Make sure there is room to encapsulate the
battery fully in case of fire.
11. Follow environmental health and safety waste
management and regulatory standards for pack
disposal.
CAUTION
Shipping damaged battery packs requires
observing more stringent regulations. Contact
Hyster before shipping damaged battery packs.
