General

This section describes how to select and perform
maintenance on batteries used in electric lift trucks.
Battery diagnosis and replacement requires special
training and equipment. Most battery repairs are done
by a special repair service. Some batteries have a
Nameplate attached to the face of the battery cover.

This Nameplate communicates specific information
about the battery including the name of the battery
manufacturer, battery type, serial number, nominal
voltage, capacity in amperes at the five-hour rate, and
service mass (with ballast, if used to compensate for
lack of battery mass).

Lithium-Ion Batteries

A lithium-ion battery converts chemical energy into
electrical energy. Chemical changes within the battery
provide the electrical energy. The battery is discharged
when the chemical reaction has occurred and the
battery no longer provides its rated voltage and
current. A reverse chemical action must occur so the
battery can be used again. The batteries described in
this section can be charged again by an electric
voltage and current from an outside source so there is
a reverse chemical action. The battery stores the
electric energy until the electric energy is needed to
operate an electric device.

A lithium-ion battery is made from several cells. Each
cell has positive and negative electrodes. The positive
electrode is a cathode while the negative electrode is
considered an anode.

A cathode is the electrode or terminal in which current
leaves the cell or battery while the anode is the
electrode or terminal in which current enters the cell or
battery.

Multi-Pack Lithium-Ion Configurations

The existing lithium-ion battery weldment is capable of
storing two additional lithium battery packs. Additional
battery packs can be easily added with the use of an
inline 175 amp fuse and wake up harness. The
harness allows the configuration of two or three battery
pack designs, however additional fuses and battery
cables will be needed for each battery added.

The 55 Ah configuration comes with one lithium-ion
battery pack and is wired in parallel.

The 110 Ah configuration comes with two lithium-ion
battery packs and is wired in parallel.

The 165 Ah configuration comes with three lithium-ion
battery packs, also wired in parallel.

Electrical Terms

Voltage:

Is an electromotive force (EMF) (also called

"potential difference") caused by the difference in
electric charge between two points. See Figure 1.

Ampere:

Is a measurement of electric current.

Watt:

Is a measure of electric power. The number of

watts is equal to the number of volts multiplied by the
number of amperes. A kilowatt-hour is 1000 watts of
electric power used in 1 hour.

Lithium-ion Battery:

Rechargable battery in which

lithium ions move from negative electrode to the
postivie electrode during discharge and back when
charging.

Cathode:

The electrode from which current leaves the

battery.

Anode:

The electrode through which positive electric

charge flows through the battery.

Ohms:

Is the measurement of electrical resistance.

Polarity:

In a battery, the electric current is shown to

flow from the positive terminal to the negative terminal.

Direct Current (DC):

When the voltage between the

two terminals is always the same polarity, the current
flow and voltage are called Direct Current.

Alternating Current (AC):

When the polarity of

voltage between two terminals is changing between
