Upgrading MRC Firmware
The MRCs contain firmware that can be upgraded from an MRC-specific firmware file while the
ISE is online and performing data I/O.
Important
:
•
Once a firmware upgrade has been initiated, no other upgrade of either MRC or DataPac
firmware may be performed until the current upgrade has completed. An Add or Remove
procedure may not be performed until the firmware upgrade has completed.
•
Before performing an MRC firmware upgrade, ensure that you have a comprehensive
grasp of system status. Use the
show mrc
ISE CLI command to determine the firmware
version currently loaded on the MRCs. Use the
show ise
CLI command to observe the
status of all FRUS. In a routine firmware upgrade all components in the system should be
operational. Use the
upgrade - - status
CLI command to ensure that no other upgrade is
in progress.
When a firmware upgrade is performed, the new firmware is automatically propagated to both
MRCs. After a firmware upgrade, the ISE automatically begins using the newly installed firm-
ware. All parameter settings, volume configurations, and other system information are preserved
through the upgrade process.
Upgrading MRC firmware is a three-step process:
• Step 1: Upload the file. During this step, you transfer the firmware upgrade file from a
location on your network to ISE local memory.
• Step 2: Upgrade the firmware. During this step, the ISE transfers the file from its local
memory to an interim bootable location. This step preserves the pre-upgrade firmware in
case a rollback is required due to a power failure during the upgrade process or the
uploaded file is not compatible with hardware or software in the ISE.
•
Step 3: Commit the firmware. During this step, the ISE restarts using the new firmware and
creates a backup copy of the new firmware, overwriting the pre-upgrade firmware. The
restart causes a brief pause in data
I/O processing without interrupting host connectivity.
During the MRC firmware upgrade, another operator connected to this ISE may use the ISE’s
CLI. However, if that operator attempts to start an upgrade, a CLI status display appears to indi-
cate that a firmware upgrade is already in progress and another upgrade cannot be started.
Note:
Use this procedure only for updating the MRC firmware on a brand new
system. To update the MRC in an existing system, the customer can use the
Updates node in ICON Manager.
