To be done before spreading

Determining specific

weight

The density is the specific weight (kg) of 1 litre of fertiliser and it is

expressed as kg/litre or ton/m3.

The following material is required to determine the density:

•

a measuring cup of minimum 1 litre with a correct scale division,

•

a scale that can accurately indicate a difference of 10 grams or

less.

Use 10 litres if you are using a less sensitive scale.

Working method to determine specific weight:



Weigh the dry, empty measuring beaker.



Fill the measuring beaker up to the 1 litre mark.



Knock the measuring beaker 5 times on firm ground.



Fill the measuring beaker up to the 1 litre mark.



Weigh the measuring beaker with the fertiliser.



Subtract the weight of the empty measuring beaker from the weight

of the full one.



Repeat the steps above three times in order to determine the

average weight.

Density of at least 1 kg/l is desirable for a good distribution of the

fertiliser. Lighter types of fertiliser would be more difficult to spread and

the maximum working width would be limited.

Finding the correct

spreading chart

Take a look in the table of contents of your spreading chart book or

have a look on the website for the spreading chart for the fertiliser with

the most comparable characteristics and desired working width,

based on the information you had gathered.
