Principles of Operation
4.1 Introduction
This chapter provides functional descriptions and block diagrams of the
major components of the Series 3860 Digital Controller.
4.2 Functional description
The Series 3860 Digital Controller consists of four major functional modules:
Servo Printed Wiring Board Assembly, Synchro/Resolver Printed Wiring
Board Assembly, Operator/Remote Interface Printed Wiring Board
Assembly, and an Autotrack Printed Wiring Board Assembly.
Support units consist of a resolver reference oscillator printed wiring board
assembly, dc power supply, front-panel assembly, backplane (motherboard),
indoor enclosure, and an outdoor enclosure.
The Servo Board is a microprocessor-controlled assembly that interfaces with
the Synchro/Resolver Board through a 16-bit parallel bus. The servo board
contains analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) to measure tachometer
feedback, digital-to-analog converters (DACs) to generate drive commands,
opto-coupled digital inputs to monitor pedestal status, and Darlington
drivers to control relays and other switching devices.
The Synchro/Resolver Board contains the pedestal position measurement
circuits and auxiliary digital I/O circuits identical to those on the servo
board. The servo board and the synchro/resolver board are connected
through the backplane. The servo board is equipped with the digital
controller firmware and, along with the synchro/resolver board, contains the
functionality required to interface the pedestal.
The Operator/Remote Interface (ORI) Board is a microprocessor-controlled
assembly which interfaces the servo board through a fast serial link. The ORI
contains drivers for the front panel, IEEE-488 interface, and external link
interface. This module also contains the user interface and provides remote
control capabilities to the digital controller. All functions available through
the front-panel are also available over the remote serial link or the IEEE-488
link.
The Autotrack Board is a microprocessor-controlled assembly, interfacing the
servo board through a fast serial link. The board has feed control drivers and
receives automatic gain control (AGC) and tracking video signals from the
