2.4.4  Host Computer Interfaces 

Communications with a remote, or host, computer are possible using one of 
four industry-standard forms supported by the Operator Remote Interface 
PWB. Serial communications are available via RS-232-C, RS-422 and fiber-
optic links; parallel communication is available via IEEE-488 interface. 

2.4.4.1  

Serial Communications 

The 3860 Digital Controller provides a serial communications channel on the 
Operator Remote Interface (ORI) which is used to interface to a host 
computer. This channel is connected simultaneously to three sets of serial 
interface circuits for RS-232-C, RS-422 and fiber-optic interfaces. Any one of 
these three may be connected provided the remaining two are not connected. 
RS-232-C and RS-422 communication rates are fixed at 9600 baud. The fiber-
optic link operates at a fixed rate of 1 x 105 baud. 

2.4.4.2  

IEEE-488 Communications 

The 3860 Digital Controller uses jumpers on the Operator Remote Interface 
PWB to set the GPIB address. The factory default address is set as device 3. If 
the digital controller communicates with a host computer via IEEE-488, the
