REMOTE INTERFACE COMMANDS

A.1    

INTRODUCTION

This appendix describes using the remote interface to control and monitor digital controller op-
eration. There are three remote interfaces available: RS-232, RS-422,  and IEEE-488. All of the
interfaces use the same communications protocol as described in this appendix.

All communications proceed using the "send and wait" protocol method; that is, a command is
sent to the ACU via the chosen interface, and the sending device must wait until a response has
been received before issuing another command. The ACU will only respond to commands re-
ceived, it does not spontaneously issue any messages. Response time to messages varies with the
message type; however,  response times will generally be much less than 100 milliseconds.

All interface transactions employ the ASCII character set. Nonprinting ASCII characters are re-
ferred to in the text by enclosing the ASCII name for the character in angle brackets (see the ta-
ble below).

The following conventions are used in this description:

(square brackets) enclose items that are optional.

...

(ellipsis) indicate that the preceding item may be repeated zero or more 
times.

<cr> indicates the carriage return character (0D hex).

<lf>

indicates the line feed character (0A hex).

<ack> indicates acknowledge character (06 hex).

<nak> indicates the not-acknowledge character (15 hex).

Upper-case letters in the command format indicate required characters; lower-case indicate vari-
able input strings.

Each message to the ACU starts with the '@' character. The next character is the PWB ID. All
commands to the Servo PWB begin with @8. All commands to the operator remote interface
(ORI) PWB begin with @0. Each message is terminated with the <cr><lf> characters.
