PREPARING FOR THE ROAD
Before venturing out on to the road with your Caravan, it is important that
you prepare correctly.
The Caravan Towing Code
This Code of practice contains recommendations jointly reviewed and
agreed by the following organisations:
The National Caravan Council.
The Caravan Club.
The Camping and Caravanning Club.
The Department of Environment, Transport and Regions.
The driving Standards Agency.
The following are guidelines only and if any specific legislation is required
you should consult the latest publications of the following:-
The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986.
The Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989.
The Motorway Traffic Regulations (England and Wales).
Note: It may also be helpful to consult a copy of the Highway Code.
Scope of the Code
The Code applies to all trailer caravans of maximum laden weight not
exceeding 3,500kg (7,700lbs). Overall width not exceeding 2.55m and
overall length not exceeding 7m (23ft approx), excluding coupling and
drawbar. This is legally the maximum size of trailer that can be towed by a
normal motor car.
