3. PROFIBUS DP
3.1 Int r oduct ion
Pr ofibus is a vendor - independent, open fiel dbus standar d for a wide r ange of applications in manu-
factur ing, process and building automation. Vendor independence and openness ar e guaranteed by
the Pr ofibus standar d EN 50 170. With Pr ofibus, devices of differ ent manufactur er s can communicate
without special inter face adjustments. Pr ofibus can be used for both high- speed time cr itical data
tr ansmission and extensive compl ex communication tasks. The Pr ofibus family consists of thr ee
compatibl e ver sions.
Profibus DP
Optimized for high speed and inexpensive hookup, this Pr ofibus ver sion is designed especial ly for
communication between automation contr ol systems and distr ibuted I/O at the device level. Pr ofibus-
DP can be used to r epl ace par al lel signal tr ansmission with 24 V or 0 to 20 mA.
Profibus PA
Pr ofibus PA is designed especial ly for pr ocess automation. It per mits sensor s and actuator s to be
connected on one comm on bus line even in intr insically- safe ar eas. Pr ofibus PA per mits data com-
munication and power over the bus using a 2- wir e technology accor ding to the inter national standar d
IEC 1158- 2.
Profibus FMS
Pr ofibus FMS is the gener al - pur pose sol ution for communication tasks at the cell l evel. Power ful
FMS ser vices open up a wide r ange of applications and pr ovide gr eat flexibility. Pr ofibus FMS can al so
be used for extensive and compl ex communication tasks.
Pr ofibus specifies the technical and functional char acter istics of a ser ial fiel dbus system with which
decentr al ized digital contr ol ler s can be networ ked together fr om the field l evel to the cell l evel. Pr o-
fibus distinguishes between master devices and slave devices.
Mast er devices deter mine the data communication on the bus. A master can send m essages without
an exter nal r equest when it hol ds the bus access r ights (the token). Master s ar e al so cal led 'active
stations' in the Pr ofibus pr otocol.
Sl ave devices ar e per ipher al devices. Typical slave devices incl ude input/output devices, valves,
dr ives and measur ing tr ansmitter s. They do not have bus access r ights and they can only
acknowl edge r eceived messages or send messages to the mast er when r equested to do so. Sl aves
are also called 'passive stations'.
