SCO UNIX Installation Guide for Two Controllers
This application note describes the setup procedure for adding up to two ESDI drives
with a secondary UltraStor controller card.
The primary card in the system can be an MFM, RLL or ESDI controller. The
ULTRA 12F24 or 12C co-resides with these controllers without any conflicts and
without requiring re-installation of the operating system. Using any combination of
both ULTRA 12F24 or 12C as primary and secondary controllers, up to four ESDI
drives can be used in the operating system, e.g. with four 650 Mbyte (formatted)
ESDI drives, a total of 2.6Gbyte storage capacity is available for the system.
This application note only describes the setup procedure for second disk controller. It
assumes that the operating system was installed for the primary controller and two
drives were connected to the primary controller. There should be 0s0 and 1s0
"devices" existing in the /dev/rdsk directory. The mkdev that will be used to create
"device" will create 2s0 and 3s0 for first and second drive in the secondary controller
respectively.
Please refer to SCO documentation for detailed procedures on "making device",
creating and adding filesystems to the kernel, such as UNIX Installation Guide,
System Administration Manual, etc.
After following the controller jumper setting and drive preparation as outlined in
Appendix Reference I, following this section, the drive(s) is ready to be added to the
UNIX operating system.
Please note the cylinder, head and sector numbers and mapping
mode selected as they will be used during mkdev process.
Adding Devices to the Operating System
1. Modify Kernel Parameter NDISK, a constant which is used to determine
how much space in the kernel is allocated for hard disk drives. It is set at 2
for the AT primary controller, which controls up to two drive(s). For adding
drives on the secondary controller, the NDISK parameter needs to be
